Dryers rarely fail without warning. Clothes take a little longer to dry, then a little longer again. A faint burning smell appears on the first cycle of the day. Something clicks that should not click. Below are the faults we get called out for most often across Dubai laundry rooms. Catching them early keeps the repair small.
The single most common dryer fault. Drum spins, timer counts down, but clothes come out damp and the drum feels cold. Nine times out of ten this is a failed heating element, a blown thermal fuse, or a stuck hi-limit thermostat. All three are inexpensive parts, and a proper diagnosis takes about fifteen minutes with a multimeter. Repair usually lands between AED 200 and AED 400 with parts.
If you can hear the motor humming but the drum stays still, the drive belt has usually snapped. If the motor also sounds strained, the idler pulley could be seized or the motor capacitor has failed. Belt replacement is a straightforward job on most residential dryers. Commercial units take longer because the cabinet needs to come apart.
Take this one seriously. A dryer that is genuinely overheating, or that produces a burning smell on every cycle, is a fire risk. The usual causes are a blocked vent hose, a lint-clogged exhaust duct, or a failed cycling thermostat. Stop using the appliance and call us. New noises usually mean a mechanical part has worn out. Common culprits are the drum rollers (rear support wheels), the idler pulley bearing, or the front glides that support the drum lip. If you hear a rhythmic squeal that changes pitch with drum speed, roller bearings are the first thing to check. Metal-on-metal grinding usually means the drum has dropped and is scraping the cabinet.
A dryer that will not start at all is usually a door switch, a tripped thermal cut-out, or a faulty start button assembly. If it starts fine but stops after ten or fifteen minutes, the machine is protecting itself from overheating because airflow is restricted, or the moisture sensor is misreading. A proper diagnostic looks at the whole airflow path before touching the electronics.
If a full load takes two or three cycles to dry, the machine is technically working, but something in the airflow or moisture sensing has gone wrong. Common causes are a partially blocked vent, a lint filter that needs deep cleaning, or a moisture sensor that has been coated with fabric-softener residue. On condenser and heat-pump models, a clogged condenser coil at the bottom of the machine is often the real cause. That coil is designed to be cleaned every three to six months and almost never is.
